One of the things we see with many medical device and equipment designs is the fluid connector is not considered until late in the design process which can lead to many issues including design changes to key equipment components. We know that making the coupling – the primary user interface – a fundamental part of the equipment design leads to better medical devices.
We’ve highlighted a 3 step strategy for selecting fluid connectors that will make certain the fluid connector is thought of early on in the design to eliminate issues (such as redesign of complete functional areas of product design, delaying market release, and costly rework) that can occur when the fluid connector is an after-thought.
1. Consider safety needs - both general connector requirements and ISO requirements.
2. Define the application functional needs - flow requirements, temperature and pressure, media effects, connector quality, fitting type, valve and mounting options.
3. Consider advanced connector functions - don't forget to investigate technologies like RFID and hybrids.
