Liquid Immersion Cooling: Getting a Bath

Cooling technology has evolved from cooling a complete data center by air conditioning to directly cooling server racks, server blades and even the chips themselves themselves with liquid cooling. Compared to the other liquid cooling solutions, immersion cooling, sometimes called submersion cooling, basically gives IT components and other electronics a bath by submerging them in a pool of dielectric fluid.

Jump in the Pool for Improved Data Center Operations

Immersion cooling is increasing in popularity, especially with large data centers that have densely packed high-performance computer systems and large numbers of server racks. In fact, using liquid immersion cooling helps lower costs in energy consumption, water use, footprint and more. Fan vibrations, dust and moisture contamination, oxidation risks, and data center hot spots are all eliminated with immersion cooling. It helps data centers operate faster, smarter, and more energy-efficiently while lessening the impact on the environment.

Immersion cooling offers many benefits compared to traditional air cooling

    • Increased thermal efficiency with a lower PUE
    • Improved performance and reliability
    • Eliminates complex airflow management
    • Potential reductions in capital and operating expenses
    • Reduction in construction time and complexity
    • More flexible data center layouts
    • Removes hurdles in finding suitable data center location since immersion cooling can be located in any environment

What liquid is used for immersion cooling?

In single-phase immersion cooling, electronic components are directly immersed in dielectric liquid. A dielectric liquid is any fluid that can remain non-conductive and resistant to electrical breakdown when faced with voltage, low or high. The dielectric liquid stays in a liquid state in a sealed tank where heat from electronic components is transferred to the fluid. Pumps then flow the heated fluid to a heat exchanger, where it is cooled and cycled back into the enclosure.

Optimize Liquid Immersion Cooling with CPC Quick Disconnect (QD) Connectors

Working with thermal engineers and data center operators around the world, CPC understands the challenges and requirements of immersion cooling. We are familiar with the materials and chemistry that thermal management professionals design for, including the various fluids used in liquid immersion cooling and how they interact—or don’t—with other components within a system. Collaborations with system designers combined with our fluid handling expertise prompted the development of CPC’s purpose-built Everis portfolio of quick disconnect couplings and connectors (QDs) for use in the liquid cooling systems for a wide variety of computing environments.

If you need to have dielectric fluids contained or moved, CPC Everis QD couplings are there to enable the liquid flow.
