Connectors: Things to consider when you’re considering a liquid cooling system

Using liquid cooling for thermal regulation of electronic equipment is becoming increasingly common. If you’re contemplating a liquid cooling system for your valuable electronics, there are three qualities to consider when selecting a supplier for fluid connectors.

    Quality one: Must-have features.

First and foremost, look for a supplier with technology that ensures dripless connections and disconnections under pressure. Other must-have features include:

    • The ability to stay connected for months, or even years, at a time.
    • Elimination of valve sticking due to seal compression.
    • Resistance to debris or contaminants.
    • True dry-disconnect with flush valves.

Also consider the technician who will be using the connectors. Make sure the connector’s latch and joints are ergonomically designed for easier use. Also look for:

    • A wide variety of mounting options.
    • Connectors needing less force to connect.
    • Swivel joints and elbows.

And finally, look for connectors that can handle your flow rates so you can optimize performance while meeting your requirements. An optimized connector reduces pressure drops that can put additional stress on pumps and other equipment.

At CPC, we are able to deliver all of these must-have requirements.

Quality two: Performance testing and validation.

Look for a vendor that has a transparent validation process—giving you increased confidence in platform reliability and the quality of components. Also look for performance testing that goes beyond flow and operating pressure. At CPC, we have a complete suite of tests including:

    • Spillage
    • Inclusion
    • Helium leak
    • Side load bubble leak
    • Cam-out test
    • Tensile
    • Impact test
    • Flow testing
    • Disconnect under flow
    • Impulse pressure
    • Creep rupture
    • Mechanical Cycle
    • Salt spray
    • Connection force
    • Burst force

An often-overlooked aspect of testing is ensuring safe shipping and storage. At CPC, we do validation testing on pre-conditioned connectors that includes thermo shocking and vibration. We also do assembly validation on the production floor and component mold validation. All of these tests assure you of a stable and repeatable manufacturing process that delivers a high-quality connector each and every time.

    Quality three: Partnership and collaboration.

When evaluating suppliers, it’s important to understand their willingness to be your partner and collaborator. This is important because every cooling system presents unique challenges that could require deep expertise, innovative technologies and custom design capabilities. A good place to start is choosing partners who are members of Green Grid® and ASHRAE®.

Finally, if you’re considering a liquid cooling system, be sure you consider fluid connectors from CPC— because we don’t stop working until the right solution is achieved for you.
